World Teachers day is a day that has been celebrated annually since 1994. It memorializes the anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation regarding the status of Teachers. This Recommendation sets yardsticks regarding the rights and responsibilities of teachers and standards for their initial preparation and further education, recruitment. Employment, teaching and learning conditions.
With the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) on education, and the dedicated target recognizing teachers as key to the attainment of the Education 2030 agenda, World Teachers Day has become the occasion to mark progress and reflect on ways to counter the remaining challenges for the elevation of the teaching profession.
World Teachers Day is co-convened in partnership with UNICEF, UNDP, the International Labor Organization and Education International. In 2019, World Teachers Day will celebrate teachers with the theme, “Young Teachers: The Future of the Profession”. The day offers the occasion to celebrate the teaching profession worldwide, to take stock of achievements, and to address some of the issues central for attracting and keeping the brightest minds and young talents in the profession.
In light of this, the Lagos State Government through the Tutor General of Lagos State Education District 3 Dr Yinka Ayandele, initiated a movie hangout to celebrate Lagos State teachers. This event was held in collaboration with Silverbird Galleria. It had in attendance, media houses, dignitaries, and teachers across all level, directors, principals, Nigerian Union of Teachers Executives and your very own DigiSmart team.
It was an amazing experience for teachers as they got the opportunity to relax and truly enjoy the cinematic experience. The day started off with the arrival of all invited guests, pictures were taken as the smiles on everyone’s face was bright. Pleasantries flew across all corners of the room as those who had not seen each other in a long while greeted themselves with joy for the occasion. Press men from media houses set their camera’s to work as interviews were conducted on the red carpet.
Soon after that it was announced that everyone queue to get their movie snacks (pop-corns and drinks of choice). I think it is of worthy mention to note that this event was planned for free for those in attendance. As soon as the pre movie activities were done, people took their seats in the theater halls and waited for the movie to start. In the cinema hall where I was seated we saw the brilliant Nigerian movie “Love Is War” and it was intriguing to see how much the teachers were relaxed and laid back.
After the movie, more pictures were taken, people trooped in to thank the Tutor General for this incredible opportunity and everyone left with smiles on their faces. Thank you to the Lagos State Education District 3 for such an opportunity and we can only hope that with time, more programs like this would be put together to celebrate this brilliant group of people.
Finally, Teachers hold the key to a better future for us all. Ahead of World Teachers Day which would be coming up on October 5, I implore us to praise teachers for their daily passion to transmit the gift of knowledge and creativity.
Think Future, Think DigiSmart.
